Professional Formation - QTLS

I am already in the course of addressing some of the weaknesses and opportunities highlighted. The recent science training I have attended (for details see under Subject Specialism) has been useful in boosting my science teaching skills (Weakness 3; see also under Reflective Practice), while this application itself and my continuing work on PhD reflect my commitment to taking up opportunities (Opportunities 2 & 4).

A major further step in professional development will be my return to the UK (addressing Threats 1-5). However, the timing of this move is not yet settled and depends on many factors, including of course securing a UK post. Here, then I will focus on more immediate plans that can implemented before the move or in anticipation of it.

1. Better CPD support (Weaknesses 3, 4, Threat 3)

As well as joining the Institute for Learning I have recently become a member of the UK Department for Education’s National College for Teaching and Leadership, and these memberships open new avenues to CPD support through their online resources and networking facilities. Examples include IfL’s extensive CPD online support (via the Resource Library and CPD Centre), and the National College’s self-study online refresher courses, online resources, and online community. I plan to explore these fully over the coming months.

2. Advanced teacher training (Weakness 2)

I am currently looking into options for further teacher training beyond QTLS. An obvious next step would be the IfL’s course The PCE teacher: Sustaining criticality beyond initial teacher education. This would enhance my professional practice and my awareness of professional development issues, as well as giving me credits towards a second Masters degree. Since most of the study is online I would be able to complete the course while in Greece, making a trip to the UK for the introductory day session (most likely the August date).

3. Leadership training (Weakness 1)

I am also exploring the possibility of taking leadership training with National College for Teaching and Leadership. I am particularly interested in their National Professional Qualifications for Middle Leadership and Senior Leadership (NPQML and NPQSL). Both of these courses are modularised, and I have been in touch with the college to ask if the modules can studied remotely while I am still in Greece and whether I might be eligible for a scholarship to defray the fees. I do not yet have definite answers but the indications are positive, and I hope I will be able to start on one or more modules in the autumn of 2014.

4. Training in teaching philosophy for children (Opportunity 3)

The two major European associations for the promotion of philosophy for children and practical philosophy are SOPHIA and EPIC INTERNATIONAL. I am particularly interested in participating in the work of EPIC, which runs workshops for teachers and trainers. I have been in contact with the Director of EPIC, Dr Catherine McCall, who has been very supportive, and I hope to attend a forthcoming EPIC workshop, either one in Istanbul from 14-16 March, or another in Riga from 6-7 June. The only problem is securing funding for travel, and I am currently exploring options for this (including self-funding).
